The Technical Information Management System (TIMS) of the Offshore Minerals Management Service (OMM) includes UNIX and PC workstations and servers. This computing environment is dispersed throughout the United States.

OMM wanted the ability to perform centralized administration tasks for all OMM systems from their main location, but also have the capability for localized administration.

  • Support to a Third-Party Prime Contractor to provide a centralized systems management platform for the nationally dispersed OMM sites

  • Allow for local systems administration from these sites

  • Provide centralized and decentralized capability to scan systems for hardware and software configurations, and to distribute software

  • Install all locations with the these systems management capabilities from one centralized location

  • Limited budget

We created a lab and production environment to handle the needs and requirements for OMM. The solution centered on IBM/Tivoli Software, specifically Inventory and Software Distribution, and our implementation was completed in just over three months.

Scripts were developed to automate software distributions, this included running before and after programs in conjunction with software distributions to machines spanning the network.

Hardware and software scans were performed on systems to populate OMM’s Oracle database. This information provided OMM with the capability to determine future distributions based on hardware and/or software limitations of nodes within the network.

After installing the central management region, a remote location was installed, configured, and tested without visiting the site, providing the customer with timely service at lower cost.

This project has provided OMM with an enterprise-wide Tivoli management system. The current Tivoli architecture provides OMM with the flexibility of centralized or decentralized administration. In the future, OMM’s Tivoli plans include the deployment of Tivoli security and performance and availability products.

  • Provided a win for the Prime Contractor as well as the DOI

  • Rapid solution deployment based on Ephibian’s previous knowledge and experience

  • Provided an Enterprise-wide systems management architecture and platform, which can be used to lower on-going O&M costs

  • Extensible architecture for future security, network, and monitoring capabilities.

  • Tuned existing software infrastructure to operate more smoothly and quickly
